Mirrors are a common ornament at home, and they are also one of the most breakable. Nobody wants 7 years bad luck, or at the very least, to open a box full of broken glass. If you are rearranging your home or thinking about the next spring clean, here are our top tips for mirror storage:
Don't Skimp On Packaging Materials There are parts of your packing you can save money on, and parts where you shouldn't try to. Items like mirrors need good quality packing materials to ensure that the mirror stays in good condition. If you need double the bubble wrap, then pay for double the bubble wrap. Obviously if the mirror is easily replaceable then you might want to hold back, but if you love it or it is worth a lot of money, it makes sense to pay for adequate packing materials.
Make Sure You Pack It Clean And Dry Before you pack your mirror it should be clean and dry so that no part of it rusts or degrades over time.
Protect The Strength Of The Mirror You need to protect the strength of the mirror and you can do this by placing a large X across it with strong tape. This will keep the strength of the mirror and if it does break, it should help the glass not to fall apart so it will make less of a mess.
Protect The Strength Of The Frame As well as the actual glass, the frame strength needs extra support in order to keep the glass safe. Protecting the corners of the mirror will help to keep the frame strong and supported. You can do this cheaply by scrunching up carrier bags or black bags and taping them to the corners.
Barrier The Mirrors Front You can help to protect the mirror by placing strong card, or even wood on the front. You can do the same on the back too, but the strongest material should be at the front. This not only keeps the mirror clean but protects it from potential bumps during transit.
Box It Once your mirror is properly wrapped and supported you should place it in a box without anything leaning on it. It should be upright to keep it safe and there should be labels on the box to ensure that those moving it know it is fragile.
Keep The Mirror Safe In Self Storage In your self storage in London, or local to you, you should ensure the mirror is kept upright and without anything heavy leaning against it. If you stack it with items against it, it may be that gravity runs its course and starts to put pressure on the mirror, eventually cracking it.
Whether your mirror is being stored in cheap self storage, or in your garage, packing it properly ensures that it is in the best possible condition when you come back to it at a later date ready to display it again. Check self storage unit prices here.
