Posted: December 3, 2018 |
The winter month bring colder temperatures, icy roads and pavements and snow, all of which can make life rather challenging. Icy and snowy pavements and roads can be difficult to walk on and can cause injury which can be particularly problematic for older people. Finding homecare services locally who can help your elderly relative on a regular basis can be a good way to make sure that they are safe and have someone keeping an eye on them whatever the season. Here we have put together a few tips to help avoid some of those common cold weather dangers that can cause issues for seniors. Avoid ice underfootIf it is icy underfoot and you need to go out, then there are a couple of things you should do to avoid falling – falls in older people can have long lasting complications. Make sure that you wear shoes with a good grip on the sole, if you use a cane make sure that tip is replaced regularly for better grip. When you come in remove your shoes straight away as any damp on them can transfer to your floor making it slippery inside your home as well. Unless your journey is completely necessary avoid going out until at least some of the ice has melted. Wear warm clothesColder temperatures can lead to issues such as hypothermia, make sure that you dress accordingly for the temperature, layers are better even indoors and don’t let the temperature in your home get too cold. If you need to go out remember to add a coat, gloves, hat and scarf to your outfit, you can easily remove these when you get to your destination. Have your car checkedIf you drive, then make sure that you have your car serviced before the cold weather hits, having your tyres, wipers and oil can make a big difference should you need to venture out onto the winter roads. It also a good idea to make sure that you have some form of roadside assistance cover in place and that you have an emergency kit in your car in case you ed up caught out by the weather – a blanket, some water and a snack and even a snow shovel. Keep in touchWe all know how important it is to keep an eye out for our neighbours, and not seeing them for a few days might be cause for alarm, especially in the cold weather. Make sure that you keep in touch with someone, so they can keep an eye on you. If you use the services of a home care agency, then there should be someone checking on you every day which can be a real peace of mind for your relatives during the colder weather.
